The film library
Introduction
The Basque Film Library was founded in 1978 for the purpose of researching, retrieving, archiving, conserving and screening films and other audiovisual media relevant to the study of cinema in general and Basque cinema in particular, and of collecting and looking after documentary and technical materials the conservation of which serves cultural and historical interests.
Research
In accordance with its name, location and domain of action, the Basque Film Library’s work focuses on what is generally referred to as Basque Cinema, whether documentary or fictional, including Basque-related historical cinematographic documents.
Retrieval
Much importance is to be attached to the retrieval of materials produced by either professionals or amateurs in order to ensure their conservation, identification and free access to their contents. The area of unpublished documents may be where there is the most pressing need to impress on the minds of amateur and private filmmakers alike the importance of preserving such documents for the benefit of present and future generations.
Archiving and Conservation
The Library collection is archived and conserved in accordance with the generally accepted norms recommended by international specialist bodies. Conservation of different types of material varies depending on their specific characteristics.
Reaching the General Public
The Library apeals to the interest of the public through regular screenings and the publication of research on Basque cinema, filmmakers and film in general.
Serving the public is an important aspect of the Library’s activities. The collections belonging to the film and book libraries may be viewed on our premises, copies may be borrowed, images can be supplied and organised tours are also offered.
